Welcome Message
Organising Committee, CEZIPS 2025
Dear Colleagues and Respected Guests,
We are privileged to welcome you all to 50th CEZIPS 2025, the Annual Conference of East Zone Indian Psychiatric Society , to be held on 30th - 31st October & 1st November 2025 at The Westin Hotel, Kolkata.
Psychiatry has always been a field that resists confinement within a single lens - It is at once historical, cultural, and biological. The theme, Charting Psychiatry across Civilizations, Communities, and Cells, seeks to showcase psychiatry across these three dimensions, demonstrating how each enriches our understanding of mental health and illness.
At the level of Civilizations, we recognize that concerns with the mind and human suffering are as old as medicine itself. The Ayurvedic tridosha framework, the humoral theories of Greece, Buddhist and Islamic perspectives on the self - all represent attempt to make sense of mental distress within their cultural and philosophical milieus. These traditions remind us that psychiatry has always been embedded in larger worldviews about body, mind, and society.
The dimension of Communities highlights how psychiatry is never simply a medical encounter, but also a social one. Communities shape how distress is expressed, how illness is named, and how care is delivered. They are also sites where stigma can either deepen suffering or where solidarities can foster recovery. Community psychiatry movements, global mental health initiatives, and culturally sensitive practices demonstrate the importance of situating mental health within everyday life, rather than apart from it.
Finally, the level of Cells brings us to psychiatry’s contemporary frontiers: the molecular and neuroscientific advances that have illuminated the roles of neurotransmitters, neural circuits, and genetic predispositions. While these discoveries offer new avenues for treatment, they also raise important ethical and philosophical questions about reductionism and the meaning of illness.
Kolkata provides a fitting setting for this exploration. The city’s intellectual heritage and psychiatric history — from the pioneering psychoanalytic work of Dr. Girindrasekhar Bose to the contributions of its leading medical and academic institutions — exemplify the dialogue between tradition and modernity that psychiatry itself requires. To reflect on civilizations, communities, and cells in Kolkata is to honor a place where history, society, and science have long intersected in generative ways.
Let’s approach psychiatry not only to treat illness, but also to better understand the human condition in all its complexity.
On behalf of the Organizing Committee, we look forward to welcoming everyone at CEZIPS 2025 at the City of Joy!
Warm Regards,
Dr. O.P. Singh
